Since bursting on to the country music scene with his song “Farmboy,” J.D. Shelburne has been growing a strong grassroots following and raking in the accolades. He’s played over 2500 dates, topped the fan voted CMT 12-pack countdown with his videos for “She Keeps Me Up Nights” and “Church Pew Bar Stool, and has shared the stage with Miranda Lambert, Chris Young, Craig Morgan, and Montgomery Gentry (to name a few).

However, no matter how bright his star may shine, the Taylorsville, Kentucky native never forgets where he came from.

Whereas his song “Straight From Kentucky” - the title track of his new album - pays tribute to the Bluegrass state as a whole, his newest single “Hometown In My Headlights” brings us smack dab into the middle of Small Town USA and the nostalgic kissed memories that come with going back home for a visit.

On the song, written by Jayce Hein, Jordan Rager, and Jimmy Thow, Shelburne offers some of the typical snapshots of the small-town way of life when he sings of driving down Main Street and seeing how nothing’s really changed and that it’s the same two lanes, the same two red lights, and the same number on the population sign, etc.

However, where this song gets elevated into the warm nostalgic vibe that connects it with anyone listening is when you stride into the chorus and he begins to unravel the memories of coming to age in that small town – the type of memories that we all universally share: a party in a parking lot, first time flames, Friday nights and crossing lines.

He stays in this lane and continues connecting the nostalgic memories with the listener as he sings of doing their best to break every rule, driving around with no destination, etc.

J.D. Shelburne has always been able to find an incredible balance between giving us songs that are perfectly matched with today’s country top 40, but also that hold true to his hometown roots. That combination has proven successful thus far for Shelburne, and “Hometown In My Headlights” carries a similar vibe. The song is catchy and draws you into its mid-tempo melody, but it keeps you hooked into it through the lyrics that hit strong on your nostalgic heart while it pulls out your own memories of growing up in small town USA.
