Since attracting a nationwide audience on season 22 of NBC’s The Voice, husband/wife duo The Dryes (Katelyn and Derek) have been on tour with Jo Dee Messina while releasing several singles that have provided a strong showing of their signature harmonies and irresistible modern country blast told through a traditional country lens.

Whereas “Mama’s Do” and “War” both leaned on a softer pace, “Dolly Would” then offered an addictive toe-tapping groove that kept you moving. The common thread weaved throughout all their most current singles, however, is that Katelyn was placed in the lead position while Derek laced the harmony.

With the recent announcement of their five-track EP, Raisin’ Beers & Hallelujahs (due out Sept. 22, 2023), The Dryes intriguingly flip their normal script with “Sawdust,” adding a different flavor to the mix by putting Derek in the driver’s seat on this tempo driven first look at the EP.

The song, co-written with Michael Farren and the late, Kyle Jacobs, embeds an insatiable groove into the two-stepping melody that’ll instantly get you moving along and tapping your toes as Derek adds rock-n-roll grit to their country styling, encouraging you to let go, let loose, and a have a whole lotta little fun.

Taking us to dancehall meccas at every map dot across the country, Derek describes each unique, regional atmosphere through the verses:

“Down in Texas they say y’all, big ol buckles hair teased tall.”

“Louisiana sure gets wild, a lotta swamp up in that style.”

“They know how to shake down walls in the woods of Arkansas.”

“Yeah, ‘ol Yoakam knows the deal way out there in Bakersfield.”

By having now already connected with anyone anywhere through the travel log style of these lyrics, like so many great line dancing songs do, the chorus then perfectly provides the actual steps for you to follow as your boot heels click on the hardwood:

“Scoot them boots, swing it low

Slap those hips do-si-do

To the left, to the right

A sip bit tipsy but we’re all in line

Dive bars, dance halls, you just name the place

The sawdust still the same”

There’s no better place to be on a country weekend night than at your local dancehall surrounded by good music, good times, and an irresistible beat. The Dryes provide a down-home flavor on “Sawdust” that absolutely encompasses each of these attributes, making this a song that will not only strike the right chord with the dancehall crowd, but one that will ignite the anticipation for things still to come from their EP this fall.
