It’s been 5 years since Zach Emery released his debut album Kansas Is My Home, but in that time, the Houston based Kansas native has been able to be right in the thick of the vibrant Texas scene and grow as an artist and songwriter.

It makes sense then, that Emery’s debut single “Burnin’ A Memory” is being promoted to Texas radio.

You’re thrust into the song with its opening lines, “Yes ma’am, I’ll have one more shot, one more round, and an old fashion to chase it down…her memory!”

These first lines set the tone for the entire song as Emery brings us straight into the dance hall on a Tuesday night as he’s drinking away the memories of how it used to be with his ex.

What I really love about how this lyric is written, is that he only vaguely revels what those memories are, which allows room for the listener to insert their own into the story.

Most of the song, however, isn’t necessarily about reliving the past but rather focusing on right now and trying to move on. Emery sings in the chorus of asking a girl to two-step with him and leaning in for a kiss, but later admits in the bridge that their two broken hearts could lead to crossing a line if they don’t take it slowly.

The dusty feel of the instrumentation and the mid-tempo melody are perfectly designed to surround the depth of the lyrics as Emery strikes each note with the emotions needed to enhance each line.

Though the song is being released to Texas radio, there is a decisively “Nashville” feel to it that comes from him recording in Music City, but it’s not so prevalent that it sounds like today’s era of pop laden country, but rather it harkens back to a bygone era where a barroom type of country song would strike a deeper emotion within the listener.
