A red-dirt influence ran through the rawness of each of the singles that Oklahoma native Luke Christenson released in 2022 – “Real,” “Piece of Me,” and “Texas” – attracting music aficionados who were clamoring for a little something more edgy that stayed left of the mainstream dial but still stuck close enough to it that it held familiarity within its sound while standing on its own two feet.

With his new single “Let It Breathe,” Christenson swerves into new territory within his sonic sound as he embraces a rock kissed edge to add an influx of guitars amid the flurry of emotions wrapped within the lyrics.

A 90’s alternative rock style reigns through a grungy feel in the guitars within the intro, perfectly setting the tone for Christenson’s vocals to slide over the top of them as they scale back into the mix through the verses, allowing him to pump proper feeling into each word of every line.

The tug and pull of the heart trying to move on from being broken during the downfall of relationship absorbs the confusing state of mind that Luke taps into as he tries to find balance between the heart wanting to press more into the problem to find its solution as the mind is saying to let it breathe, essentially to give the issues some space.

Singing through an obvious hurt and pain in the chorus, he injects his voice with a grit that encompasses his frustrations:

“If not this way, what’s meant to be?

It ain’t as easy as it seems

So why my mind keep telling me

To let it breathe”

Maturely owning up to his own shortcomings that played a role in their breaking apart, Christenson elevates the depth of the lyric when he admits that they are both to blame, while pointing to the toll that insecurity can take on a partner.

Walking on the very far edge of country, tip-toeing that line as he embraces much more of his rock influences this go around, provides the opening page of Luke’s next chapter as he fluidly walks in between genres to give us a song that transparently connects the confusing emotions of a heart that’s breaking with anyone who’s ever experienced a shattered heart.
