JAY ALLEN - New Girl - ONErpm
Though “Blank Stares” certainly put Jay Allen on the country music map, 2024 is shaping up to be a monumental turning point in the rising sensations career as he continues to pour out new music that’s shining the definition of his personal growth as a singer-songwriter.
Following his recent strike at radio with “No Present Like The Time,” and his very well-received cover of Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season,” Allen now delivers his latest single, “New Girl.”
Laced in an addictive melody that pulls the rhythm snuggly against the edge of his gravelly toned vocal, the emotional drive balances that heartbroken space between wanting to mentally go back to when things were once going great versus reaching an understanding that looking back means staying stuck.
Knowingly confessing in the opening verse, “reliving isn’t living, it’s just wasted time,” brushes perfect accent to the chorus, which sees him holding hope that a new girl will come along and change everything, perfectly lining up where he’s currently at in his heartbreak with the freeing outlook of what, and who, comes next:
“So I’ll keep
Getting better at being better off without you
Pouring myself something stronger than me
Keep letting go even though I don’t want to
Remind myself to breathe
Keep taking one step forward and two steps back
Telling myself it don’t hurt so bad
And that the hardest part is hanging on
Until a new girl comes along”
Radiating an eye’s forward perspective through a smile on his face, he drapes the picture of his tomorrows in hopefulness as he begins to add descriptions of who she may be, what she may look like, etc. providing prospect toward the future while giving closure to the past.
Though there’s always been an undeniable realness within the honesty of each of his songs, “New Girl” really gives us a strong look at the direction Jay Allen is taking. Wrapped in pure emotion, raw edginess, and truth-laden lyrics that highlight a connectible situation with the listener, Allen elevates into his next chapter with a song worth listening to on repeat.
Jay is currently out on his first headlining tour, the "Night of Hope Tour," where he will share personal stories and raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease.
