Q&A's

While there isn’t any specific formula to breaking through as a new artist, a great place to start is with a song that perfectly introduces who you are all-around. That’s exactly what Tyler Short has done with his new single “This Is Me.” We recently had the opportunity to chat with Tyler about the new single, his songwriting inspirations, what we can expect from him in the very near future, opening for Ryan Upchurch, checking bull riding off his bucket list, and more!

1. You’ve recently released your new single “This Is Me.” Tell us a little bit about the song.

Well, the spark that started this was the cutting of a flame in a previous relationship. I guess you could say I was a bit jaded from peopling questioning who I am. I think I finally got to a point where I needed to say something and writing a song is usually the best way.

2. How important was it to you that you introduce exactly who you are as an all-around artist and person with your first official single?

It definitely became a priority to me after some discussion on what to release first. I realized that the other songs only show a portion of me, where “This Is Me” lets you in on a larger concept of who I am. I felt like it was more valuable to let them see me as a whole first.

3. The song is being hailed as a blue-collar anthem. Why did you feel it was crucial to reach this demographic as your first introduction?

I’ve actually heard it be referenced as that a few times now, and that’s really cool. I can’t say that I had a specific aim in demographic when deciding to release this song first. It really came down to deciding it was more important to let the listener in on who I am right from the start. I grew up and still am a blue-collar guy, just so happens it lines up well I guess.

4. You started writing songs at the age of 19. What artists and writers inspired you the most when you first started writing?

Oh man, this list could go on and on. I have to say the songwriters I really liked back in the early stages of writing were Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley & Eric Church. When it comes to other artists Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Travis Tritt, Randy Travis, Blake Shelton.

5. Is there a song that you’re currently working on that you can’t wait for your audience to hear? If so, which song and why that one in particular? What does it mean to you?

I actually just finished a song not too long ago I’m excited about. Really looking forward to getting it to the studio to see what we can do with it. The title of the song is “Endlessly”.  It’s just a song from the heart specifically written for someone. It means I get to express myself the best way I know how to someone I care about.

6. Speaking of other songs that you may be working on; what can we expect to hear from them that “This Is Me” doesn’t really show?

The other songs on the EP are definitely mixed. You’ll get to see the love side for sure, along with some fun and deep looks into me. The track “I Forgive” gets into a little about my personal relationship with my biological father. So, y’all get to hear about some of the reality of my life.

7. You’ve opened some shows for Ryan Upchurch. What did you learn most about performing from watching him that you’ve since been able to apply to your own performances?

Definitely helped me look at different ways to make sure I’m interacting with the crowd. Even after the show, being able to spend some time chatting - he is really down to earth and took the time to give back to his fan base.

8. Your mother encouraged you to sing at church when you were younger. How did that church experience help shape your musical journey the most?

That first time I sang at church it really let me know how much I enjoy singing in front of people. Now I may not have realized the significance of that day until later in life, but I still remember singing “Away In A Manger” like it was yesterday. I reckon it was the beginning of it all.

9. Outside of music you do some bull riding and rodeoing. We’re intrigued by this sport. Tell us a little bit about that and how you got started with it?

Well, this was originally just a bucket list thing for me. I’ve wanted to try it for years and finally got introduced, to a now good friend, who let me borrow some gear. After I rode my two first bulls ever CJ asked me If I’d do it again. Told him maybe and he just said, "Okay, I'll see you next week." Guess he was right.

10. What is the best piece of advice that you can offer an aspiring songwriter/artist just trying to break into the music business?

Keep working hard and show up every day. Consistency is key in becoming an artist just like anything else. Making music a part of your routine is essential in progress. Keep your head up and enjoy every moment.
