MEGAN MORONEY - 28th of June - Columbia Records Nashville

Though Megan Moroney established herself through the wild success of “Tennessee Orange,” it was the pure vulnerability of that song, and several which followed (“Why Johnny,” “Girl In The Mirror,” “No Caller ID), that laid the foundation she’s standing on today as she continues to open her next chapter with “28th of June.”

Uncovering even deeper layers of vulnerability, the breakup ballad sees Moroney expertly using cry like tones to carry a waver in her voice over heart tugged lyrics as she reminisces on a past relationship, navigating the what could have been memories that always wreck her whenever their anniversary date comes back around.

“28th of June will come one day, I’ll wake up and be okay…But the rain outside says it won’t be today,” she sings in the bridge, encompassing the overall vibe and exposing her struggle; staying stuck in her hurt and unable to move forward from their past.

Recalling their last anniversary through the opening verse with picture painting memories of rose petals on the bed, drinking red wine while dancing around the room, etc. swerves seamlessly back into her depressive state in the here and now as she strides into the chorus through what masterfully feels like an unsuccessful attempt at trying to convince herself to be okay with the fact that what was once such a special day is now just another ordinary Tuesday.

“Just cause something’s good

Don’t mean it last

By fall we fell apart and just like that

Time kept ticking, and you moved on

Another 365 have come and gone

Today would’ve been a day we celebrate

Now it’s just another Tuesday”

Sliding deeper into her isolation in the second verse, she confesses that she still loves him while relenting that she’s called out sick from work, is waking up alone but still sleeping in his shirt, and that she’s hoping she still crosses his mind as much as he does hers.

There are always moments that will stop us in our tracks whenever we experience a breakup and are feeling stuck in place, invoking a memory that instantly sets us back no matter how many steps we’ve taken forward up to that point. In this case, something as simple as a date you once circled in a heart on the calendar.

Megan Moroney has a knack for harboring an emotion, and then crafting it from heart to paper to song in such a way that it reaches through the speakers and holds the heart chords of the listener while providing a shoulder for them to lean on. She shines once again within the spotlight of her self-defined “emo cowgirl” era with “28th of June.”
