Nashville’s music community has a way of taking a good songwriter and making them great through co-writes, live performance experience, and them being 100% present and invested in perfecting the craft day in and day out.

Consistently showcasing his growth as a songwriter over the past year, Milwaukee native Brian Goyette has continually impressed with “10 on Tennessee” and “Radio Made Us,” while picking precise songwriter rounds to take part in so that each of his appearances have worked together to elevate his status level another notch.

He now returns with his brand-new single, “Always Stay the Same.”

The song, co-written by Brian with Danny Wells and Erin McCaffrey, elevates a raw honesty into the clean wavering of his voice to allow him to strike heartfelt emotion with each line sung as he reminisces back on the one who got away, painting pictures through the opening verse with comparative lines that highlight just how much she’s changed since leaving their small-town, and him, for the city lights:

“Traded in your boots for a pair of Jimmy Choo’s.”

“Used to be a truck jacked high now you’re a top-down ride.”

However, the chorus skewers away from the realities of the here and now to cleverly trace the nostalgic memories of how he’s choosing to remember her through thoughts of the cozy country nights they shared:

“It’s a star lit sky with your head here on my shoulder

Swearing it would be this way, be this way forever

The love we made, it will never fade

Like a tattoo on my brain

No matter how much you change

The memories always stay the same”

Continuing to pinpoint her attitude shifts in the second verse, he laments that a streak of wild has taken over who she once was as she’s now skipping church to raise hell all night long, but also adds tremendous depth to the song when he confesses that he’s not been the same since she left, and that he’ll be right there waiting for her whenever she’s ready to come back home to small town USA.

With an overall vibe that bends toward seeing someone you used to know going through their new life on social media, Brian Goyette perfectly captures the heartbreak we experience through non-context photos while trying to navigate the next chapter as he puts the pieces back together and holds tightly to the memories he still cherishes so much, embracing the fullness of the emotional heart tug of moving on while staying stuck.
