Josh Gallagher initially became a household name during his very strong run on season 11 of NBC’s The Voice where he made it all the way to the finale as part of Team Adam. And while he’s filled his resume with tremendous success stories since then, 2023 is arguably proving to be his monumental breakout year.

Alongside landing his first major label cut as a songwriter with Lewis and Lee Brice’s “Product Of,” Gallagher has also turned heads and heightened the buzz surrounding his artist career with hot song releases “House Fire,” “Human,” and now, the show-stopping “Father to Father.”

Wrapping his very distinguishable, signature rasp into the softer pace of the song, perfectly allows him to add raw honesty to what is essentially a bedside prayer that sees him dropping to his knees, folding his hands, closing his eyes, and admitting that he’s going to need some help with how to be a good father while gratefully thanking the man upstairs for the blessings He’s already showered him with.

Confessing in the opening verse that although he always knew that someday he’d be a father, he never pictured it being while he was still this young, aptly providing the catalyst that positions the remainder of this heartfelt prayer when he leads into the chorus on the back of the line, “If I’m gonna get the job done, I’m gonna need a hand.”

Hitting on the very thing that God wants from all His children, the chorus then sees Gallagher selflessly coming to God with the knowing that he can’t do this in his own strength, leaning humbly on Him:

“Father to Father, dad to dad

I hope it ain’t too much to ask

Could I bend your busy ear from time to time?

Cause you know I’ve raised some beers, raised some Cain

But raising this boy’s a different thing

No, I’ll never walk on water or be half as a good as you

Hell, I’m just asking for some help to be a good father too

Father”

Gallagher pushes through the second verse by first thanking God for the blessing of his own earthly dad and the teachings that he’s providing, while endearingly humbling himself again when he admits, “I know all about girls and engines, but when my boy’s got bigger questions, I’ll let you know.”

Sealing the Amen with a baptismal promise, Gallagher then fully opens his heart to God and lets him know, “I’ll love him like you love Jesus…I promise God, I’ll teach Him to turn to you like I do.”

Country music vast catalog is made up of crafty songs, solid lyrics, and stories that connect heart to heart with the listener. Gallagher not only embodies all those signature genre traits, but he transparently shares his heart with the listener, vulnerably showing his fears and humbleness while also showing us how to trust the Biblical idea that God won’t give you what you can’t handle.
