Since impacting radio with “I Know A Girl,” Black River Entertainment recording artist MaRynn Taylor has continuously elevated her status through hot song releases “Every Single Summer” and “Make You Mine,” while striking milestone achievements from her bucket list; named as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country and making her debut on the Grand Ole Opry.

She now returns with her newest release, “01.”

The softer pace of the melody allows for the pure innocence of Taylor’s voice to swirl into the lyrics, adding heartfelt emotions to what is essentially an apology letter to her younger self.

Inspired by a social media post that suggested taping a photo of a younger you to your mirror to help you stay motivated, Taylor describes her personal photo so vividly that you feel like you’re standing there looking at it with her as she tells of her younger self having bleach blonde hair, wearing a birthday hat, and being dressed all in pink.

However, the song truly finds its depth-filled shape when MaRynn sings straight at her younger self from the here and now perspective, heart tugging as she quite literally faces her mirror to say sorry to herself for losing all the unique qualities that made her who she was back then, lamenting through the chorus:

“That girl I used to know

She wasn’t scared of nothing

She had a fire in her soul

And she knew just what she wanted

She was happy, young, and free

She could love so carelessly

And she made no apologies

But I owe one to the girl from 01”

What’s always so strong about MaRynn Taylor’s songwriting, though, is her crafty way of instantly pulling you in to only then make you have to listen to the end of the song to fully understand the why aspect of the lyric, which in this case it comes through the honest reveal that the walls she’s created in her life today derived from a broken heart.

We all have moments in our lives when we look back on who we were and wonder how we lost our childlike innocence and if we can ever get it back. By bringing us to that gut punch feeling of guilt that you naturally put on yourself through these thoughts, MaRynn Taylor gives us a song that connects with our heartstrings while offering a stark reminder to learn to live again by looking at who we’ve always been.
