Erin Gibney broke onto the country music scene on the back of solid singles, “Naïve” and “Easy Like That,” two modern country songs, both full of radio-friendly pop laden melodies which allowed the then new artist the perfect amount of room to flex her incredible vocal know-how and immediately garner attention.

Her brand-new single “That’s What I’m Looking For,” co-written by Justin Wilson, Kyle Fishman, and Taylor Acorn, sees her embracing an entirely different side of her arsenal as she swerves out of her normal pop country comfort zone and moves into more of a purely pop driven beat and mid-tempo groove that absolutely suits her confidence as she pulls you through a checklist of all that she’s wanting from whoever wants to be with her:

“Tell me I’m so damn pretty”

“Ask me if my day was good”

“A kiss that drives me crazy”

“Hold my hand out on the town”

“Be there when I fall asleep”

“Eyes for nobody but me”

Expertly, though, the chorus then provides a bold warning to not waste her time if you can’t deliver on what she needs, setting boundaries while recognizing what red flags she’ll be looking for in someone who’s trying to win over her heart.

As much as this song stays focused on her and her needs, Gibney unashamedly faces the mirror in the bridge when she admits her flaws and reveals what might be the biggest thing that she needs from someone when she sings:

“I’m perfectly imperfect

I need someone who loves me for it”

Though the moody, pop tones that are built into the rhythm and melody may initially catch you off guard if you’re expecting more of the same from this promising young talent, the unexpected territory that she takes us into intriguingly sets a new chapter in motion for Gibney as she unapologetically continues to explore within her sound.
