KARISSA ELLA
"Beautiful Is You'"
117 Music
With her last couple singles, “Hometown Bar” and “Vintage,” Karissa Ella dripped nostalgia into her songs and immediately connected them with the listener as she took them on a reminiscing journey back into their own history as they envisioned their memories with smiles on their faces.
Her new single, “Beautiful Is You,” sees her sliding out of that nostalgic vibe and moving into a very necessary, much needed song that’s rooted in encouragement as she challenges us to not pay attention to the superficial world that surrounds us, but to instead, embrace our unique beauty and love who we are.
Co-written by Karissa, Alex Seier, and Leslie Satcher, the soft, piano led instrumentation allows Ella’s voice and incredible lyrics to be the true centerpiece of the song as they take on a big sister feel with caring tones embedded into the vocal tilt that wrap around you like the arms of a hug.
She warns of how looking at the wrong material can have a negative effect on our self-esteem, singing us through a tale of a younger, most likely teenage girl who is bringing herself down by comparing herself to the woman she sees in fashion magazines, the ones starring on phony reality television, and whenever she scrolls through her social media feeds.
Pulling idea from the Biblical verse that you were fearfully and wonderfully made, Ella injects the song with a heaping helping of encouragement through the chorus, singing:
“Beautiful is everything you are
Beautiful, girl feel it in your heart
Cause It ain’t mascara and it ain’t the clothes
Look in the mirror baby, don’t you know
Beautiful is you”
And again, in the bridge:
“There’s only one you
Baby, you got to find the truth
It’s more than what you see”
“Beautiful Is You” acts a bold, heartfelt reminder that boldly tells us something that we all need to take to heart, connect with, and hold on to when anxiety and negativity try creeping into our thought process.
The song also holds a strong personal connection with Karissa, who has been directly affected by breast cancer in her family.
