Paige King Johnson really broke onto the scene with “Just Like You” in 2020, but over the past year she’s solidified herself as one to watch in country music on the back of the success of “Baby Don’t” and “Homes in the Hometowns.”

“This one’s for all the girls out there who feel like they haven’t quite found their way yet,” read a social media post from Johnson when she was hyping the release of her newest single “American Beauty,” a built for modern radio, mid-tempo pop country gem that provides much needed encouragement to anyone who’s feeling left out.

“She’s not like the other girls she knows,” sings Johnson in the opening verse of the song while setting everything in motion when she then reveals how the main character tries to fit in on Friday

nights, even though it’s not who she is.

The second verse digs a little deeper into the struggle that has caused our main character to go off course when Johnson sings of a heartbreak that seemingly is the catalyst:

“That boy, he don’t know what he’s missing

Just wait one day he’ll be wishing

That he held onto your heart of gold.”

The story through the verses, though, is perfectly written in such a way that you’re first pulled into genuinely caring about the character by the time Johnson pushes into the chorus and sings of how the girl is like a movie star and pretty soon the whole world will see that about her, while she then utilizes the bridge as the blast of encouragement when she sings, “You’re gonna be everything you want and more!” 

“American Beauty” is a relatable song for so many people who feel lost and/or stuck right now, which should make it Paige King Johnson’s next charting hit.

However, where it elevates Johnson’s star the most is that it continues to show her tremendous growth spurt from song to song. Her lyrics are getting even stronger and her crisp, clean voice is becoming more and more the signature that stands in the spotlight as she masterfully uses it here to convey the lyrics in such a way that the song comes across as like a caring older sister offering advice while being the shoulder to lean on at the same time.
