The Nashville music industry has a very interesting, although confusing way of doing business when it comes to a new artist. If they don’t sound like what’s in the current Top 40 then they’ll most likely be deemed as too experimental, whereas if they do sound exactly like what’s on the Top 40, they’re often told they’re not unique enough.

This confusing industry response often leaves most newcomers more dejected than anything. But occasionally one will sneak through that doesn’t get deterred, stays in their lane, and discovers their own vibrant sound.

That’s the case with California native Emily Blackbird and her debut single “Ordinary Dream Girl.”

With influences that range from country to folk and all things in between, Blackbird delivers an autobiographical song that removes any constraints and allows her to really give us a unique vibe that is unable to fit inside any labeled box you might try to place her in.

The song, which Blackbird sings on of her struggles and triumphs in Nashville, leans on an airy electronic production element through its intro which quickly gives it an intriguing atmospheric vibe.

Using deeply poetic lyrics to convey the elements of truth about persevering and overcoming the obstacles to make it as a new artist, Blackbird sings lines such as “Now with the reason and right season, they can hear me now” and “Evolutions, revolution push beyond the ground.”

But as much as this song is about her own personal journey, it truly elevates when Blackbird offers  encouragement that comes plucked straight out of her story and gives it to those who are just starting to chase after their passion today:

“The diamonds in the world they’re gonna shine, shine.”

“When times get rough, we come out tough beyond the hollow crowd.”

Shredding guitars lead us to a dreamy, 1960’s kissed lyrical bridge that sounds like something that’s lost from the popular psychedelic era, giving this song another noticeable layer for Blackbird to claim as her own.

Not quite a country song, but not quite not a country song either. This first taste of the new album that she’s been working on owns the fact that it can only be classified as 100% authentically Emily Blackbird, which makes for a solid debut song as she quickly puts it all out on the table by unapologetically introducing herself by saying this is me!
