JENNA LAMASTER - Drunk Thoughts - Sheltered Music

“You only get one chance to put out your very first single,” prophetically said Jenna LaMaster about her debut release, “Drunk Thoughts.”

And while this may be the troubadour’s first official release, she is certainly no stranger to Nashville’s music community. Her California bred Texas roots have brought a flare to her style that encompasses flashes of 80’s and 90’s country flavor within her unique aura, presenting a sought-after sound that has continually turned industry heads.

The song, co-written by Jenna, Lee Starr, and Whitney Duncan, leans into a simplistic, airy aura within the 1-2 acoustic strum of the melody, while tapping lyrically into the age-old adage that you reveal the most transparent truths after you’ve been drinking.

With a whispered softness in the tone of her voice, LaMaster evaluates where her life is at after another one of those types of nights, singing poetically through a wish list in the opening verse of who she should be versus who she is;  “I probably oughta be settled down by now,” “I wish I didn’t want another cigarette,” etc.

However, the song displays its pure depth when she moves into the chorus on the back of the truth revelation as to why she’s even been drinking in the first place:

“I’m just drinking cause I’m lonely

I’m just lonely cause your gone

Your just gone because I can’t keep a good thing round too long

And I’m thinking in the morning

That I’ll still be missing you

Drunk thoughts, sober truth”

Holding tightly to the pains of what used to be as she pulls into the second verse, Jenna masterfully spotlights the tragic effects that her past heartbreak is having on her today and how it’s hindering her love life as she cries through the fact that she’s scared to death whenever she finds someone new because it always results in her wishing it was her ex, thus beginning another cycle of repetitive loneliness.

Songwriters are the lifeblood of Nashville. They’re what makes “Music City” tick as they work tirelessly on crafting songs with familiar themes in a fresh and different way.

However, when a songwriter makes the move from the writing room to the bright artist spotlight, it’s a step that must be taken with the proper precision as your first move will define your entire career trajectory. Jenna LaMaster has created a masterpiece with “Drunk Thoughts,” perfectly introducing all her signature characteristics within an emotionally charged piece that tugs all the right heart strings of the broken-hearted listener who has reached the stage of self-reflection.
