Chloe Collins has definitely found a songwriting muse in the hit television program Criminal Minds.

Whether it be specific relationships of characters, the overall theme or title of an episode, or simply a line that was spoken during the show, there’s a spark of influence that shines through her recent charting single “Somebody Else’s,” her fiery, pop punk infused “That’s On You,” and her brand new release,” The Devil I Know.”

With a moody, piano-based instrumentation during the onset of the song, Collins darkens the overall feel as she twists her unique, signature vocal into lyrics that are toned in such a way that they encapsulate the anxious pain and confusing hurt that you experience when you feel stuck in the turmoil of a toxic, controlling relationship that you’re continually attracted to.

Clearly knowing how bad he is for her, Collins sings through contradicting emotions in the verses such as how he’s deadly on her heart but sets her soul on fire and how she wants to set him free but can’t get him off her mind.

In a defeated sounding way, she sings of trying to escape from the hold he has on her as she fully admits in the bridge that he’s her vice before completely giving in yet again to the “devil I know” as she elevates her vocal in the chorus to highlight the stinging of her decisions:

You make the underworld look like its heaven

Seven sins sound like confession

Smoke and mirrors

Blind me from making good decisions

I’ll be yours long as you let me

Drag me down drown me until I can’t breathe

I’ll ignore all the evidence

I got to go with the devil I know

Because she pulls her influence from Criminal Minds, Chloe Collins allows herself to run through a gamut of styles to match the different vibes of the storytelling plots and emotions that she wraps into her lyrics. This then lets her expertly walk outside of any distinct genre box that you might try to place her in as she moves fluidly between traces of country, rock, punk, and pop deepening her audience appeal depending on which song you’re listening to, while still somehow knowing all the many different ways to make each song endearingly define itself as purely Chloe Collins!
