With country music fusing together with pop more and more, the genre is wide open right now and innovative styles and sounds that have never been heard in country music before are enticing new fans and pulling them in.

With a very soulful twist, Nicole Marden brings an intoxicating vibe to her new single “Obsession” as it fuses together with country ideals and pop sensibilities to pull you into the lyrics that touch on a subject that we’ve all experienced: the yearning for a flirtatious new crush in the aftermath of a heartbreak.

Self-describing herself through a myriad of different emotions, Marden sings in the opening verse of being jaded, headstrong, cynical, and a don’t need a man type of girl. Interestingly, though, she flips the script when she brings us into the chorus with the line “take me back to 17,” which leads to her revealing that what she wants, despite her current state of emotions, is a young lust that encompasses the feeling of a carefree obsession.

The second verse focuses on introducing us to the someone who she’s found that could satisfy that itch – one who might be a wrong turn, lines blurred, in-between type of guy; in other words, a flirtatious new crush with no strings attached because as she sings in the bridge, “don’t want to lose myself.”

“Obsession” is very vibey song that teeters on the edge of several different genres without ever fully stepping into one or the other. Combine that with Marden’s voice, which oftentimes comes across as floaty and dreamy, and you have a song that perfectly captures the essence of the lyrics.

Whether or not this comes across as too far left of the current pop-country sound and style remains to be seen, but no matter how you slice it, in a very crowded country music scene Nicole Marden has managed to present something that is uniquely her own without ever sounding like a carbon copy of anyone else.
