ACM Songwriter of the Year Hardy has released a song, featuring rising star Lainey Wilson, that has garnered the attention from fans, fellow artists, and critics alike.  “wait in the truck” is a story of pain, suffering, revenge, sadness, and appreciation all rolled into nearly five minutes of emotion-driven lyrical brilliance.

Hardy has made a name for himself in the past having written hit songs for the likes of Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, and Dierks Bentley, but he has been able to distinguish his own music from his songwriting-only-accredited tunes by creating his own unique sound and lyrical approach.

“wait in the truck” is a true country song which will be seen as such by the most traditional fans of the genre.  It’s a song with a story, something that has become a rarity in modern country music.  It tells the tale of a stranger driving through town and discovers a woman who is a victim of domestic abuse.  The steps that follow illustrate the pain, anguish, and rage that are all relevant emotions to be felt as a result of such a situation.

Written by Hardy along with Hunter Phelps, Jordan Schmidt and Renee Blair, the song hits its stride when Wilson’s vocals hit the listener’s ears.

I never thought my day of justice

Would come from a judge under his seat

But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me

Wait in the truck

The vocals are perfectly blended behind the somber melody, leaving the listener hanging on every on-coming word.  It’s a song that may not be “fun” to listen to, but as a fan of country music, it’s something we all need to hear.  Yes, it touches on a sensitive subject, spawning many different emotions and opinions with regards to how the song’s story ends, but that very notion is why so many have come to love country music for so many years.  It makes you think.  It makes you feel something.  And it stays with you long after it ends.
