Q&A's

Austin English is certainly no stranger to the Texas Music scene. His songs have earned over a quarter million streams, he’s charted in the Top 30 with his 2019 single “Heartache in a Small Town,” and he’s turned heads very quickly after hooking up with 40 West Entertainment and releasing “Willie Nelson T-Shirt” and “Goodnight Marie.” With the release of his brand-new single “In The Mix,” Austin English takes his first run at national mainstream radio, and we recently had the chance to chat with him about the song, why it’s perfect for the mainstream audience, the project that is coming down the line, and much more!

1. Tell us a little bit about your new single “In The Mix.”

Bottom line is it’s just a fun song. Fun to play, fun to hear, and it was a blast to record it.

2. “In The Mix” is the first time in your career that you will bringing a single to national mainstream radio. Why do you feel that this song is the perfect one for that type of push?

I think the song is perfect for a mainstream audience because it’s real. It’s about stuff that really happens where I grew up. The fact that it’s real sells the song in my opinion.

3. “In The Mix” was not written by yourself, so when you are listening to songs from outside writers what are you most looking for when choosing whether it’s a good song for your project?

I’m looking for songs that grab me, songs that I’m a fan of, and songs that I’ll enjoy singing for the next 5-10 years at every show.

4. Speaking of projects, this song is the first release from a new project that you are currently working on. When can we expect that new project? Will it be an EP or full-length?

We are currently planning a fall release and you should expect at least a six song EP.

5. What will the project offer listeners that they won’t hear from just listening to “In The Mix?”

We have so many great songs picked out! A few more sing along songs and a great ballad will be on this project.

6. Is there another song besides “In The Mix” that you can’t wait for your fans to hear?

There is honestly about 3 songs I can’t wait to release. If you comb through our Facebook page I bet you’ll find some acoustic versions of them.

7. For someone who first discovers you and your music through “In The Mix,” what other songs from your back catalog would you recommend that they listen to so they can get a full idea of who you are as an artist?

Start with “Crazy”, then “7th Street”, the “Heartache in a Small Town”, and wrap up with “Willie Nelson T-Shirt”. If you’re in the mood, check out our cover of “Everlong” also.

8. You’ve had a lot of success on the Texas Music Chart. How is the approach for a national mainstream push most different than only going after the Texas charts?

As this is the first time, there is a learning curve. Texas has a lot of independent stations and personal relationships go a long way. National radio, from what I can tell, is a corporate world and so we have to break through that barrier. Once we do the payoff is way bigger though.

9. A lot of success in the Texas scene is based around the live show. You’ve had the opportunity to open for Charlie Daniels, Reckless Kelly, Gary Allan, and more. What did you learn from watching those artists perform that you’ve since applied to your own shows?

All of those guys put out great songs and they were just themselves. So I just try to go and be myself, put out music I think is good, and give that to an audience.

10. What is the best piece of advice that you can offer an aspiring songwriter/artist just trying to break into the music business?

Just go out there and do it. There’s no formula as to who makes it and who doesn’t in the independent world. So go and take your shot and give it 109%. You’ll never be disappointed that way.
