When the Eli Young Band delivered “Lucky For Me” in November of 2021, they gave us our first taste of what to expect with their next chapter by offering us an innovative and exciting twist on the signature sound that has kept them thriving for two decades.

They now return with “Love Talking.”

The song, written by Mike Eli, Jeffrey East and Eric Arjes, sticks with the always relatable topic of relationships as they sing of the anxiousness in the immediate aftermath of the moment where you first say those three little words and the not knowing if your timing was right or if that’s how the other person is feeling.

With the cat already out of the bag, the first verse sees Eli confessing to her that he never uses words like forever and that his heart started thinking out loud when she started leaving. However, as the lyrics press forward, they expertly begin to present a shift in his attitude to him being okay with saying it and embracing the truth of it as we really see in the chorus:

“When I said you’re the only one

I’m ever gonna need, ever gonna want

Don’t know what came over me

That was just the love.

When I let it slip that I

Wanted you for my whole life

And you and me turned into us

That was just the love talking.”

As we push into the second half of the song, Eli continues embracing the truth and puts it even more on the line when he further confesses to her, “I’ve been holding on to this for a long long time.”

This is an ultra-relatable lyric that listeners will easily gravitate towards, but it’s the cool, vibey build in the instrumentation that elevates the melody and draws you in deeper. There’s an initial softness to the instrumentation that mirrors Eli’s innocent vocal delivery, which then slowly tilts our ear toward the catchy chorus where the band fully kicks in to deliver the sonic blast to match the eureka moment of the words.

This song, much like they did on “Lucky For Me,” still holds true to all those signature feels that have continuously made the Eli Young Band a household name, while also introducing that new, fresh quality to keep the buzz going strong as this exciting next chapter continues to open.
