Prospective new talent rolls into Nashville as quickly as the busses can get them here. There’s an old saying in town that you can always tell who someone is that is here to chase their dreams because they arrive in town with their dreams packed in the guitar case that they are holding at their side.

Some of them are relocating, while others are just here to record, but either way, it takes that very something special to stand out and make headway in the overcrowded country music scene. Missouri based Jed Melton has that something special.

He’s been digging in, learning from the best of the best, and creating a buzz since 2019 with his songs “Til Monday Rolls Around” and “Ozark Summer.” However, it’s with his new song “Tonight’s On Me,” that Melton has the strong opportunity to take that buzz and turn himself into “one to watch.”

The song instantly grabs you with an infectious guitar lick that blasts out of the speakers in a similar way that Josh Thompson did on “Wanted Me Gone.”

Melton uses most of the lyric to describe the perfect country girl he’s smitten with: “not afraid to shoot a deer, grab a tac6kle box, crack a cold beer,” “She can throw out a line off a creek bank and reel them crappie in,” etc.

However, as much as this song is focused on describing her, it flips when his true admiration of her shines through like a big thank you during the hook when he tells her to just sit back and relax because “tonight’s on me.”

What makes a new artist stand out is all the little things to make a song so memorable that it sticks with the listener. For me, that always comes with the lyrics. While there are plenty of songs like this one out there, Melton cleverly uses specific descriptions to make this one stick - for example, mentioning Busch Light instead of just saying cold beer, or reeling in crappie instead of just saying fishing.

He masterfully balances between the classic 90’s infused country sound that he’s becoming known for, while smashing it together with just enough of the right modern touches to help it slide in alongside the Top 40 sound of the more neo-traditional sounding crop of current artists.
