Carolyn Miller announced a very ambitious release schedule in correlation with the first installment of her Nashville-based female showcase series, Women of Country Presents: Carolyn Miller & Friends, creating a buzz that kicked off in June during CMA Fest, rolled forward with her last single “New Wore Off,” and now continues ahead with “Why Do I,” the second of 4 original songs she’s releasing in 2022.

Written by Frank Legeay, McCall Chapin, and Nicole Croteau, the slower paced power ballad leans against piano laced instrumentation that smartly acts as subtle accompaniment to never overpower Miller’s spotlight shining vocal performance as she continues to impress with her incredible range while defining her signature pop country infused style.

Break-up, heartbreak songs are a dime a dozen in country music, but Miller moves away from the typical storyline of being the one getting broken up with, to instead come at it from the aspect of the one doing the heartbreaking as she perfectly explores the confusing, anxiety ridden turmoil that is internally felt when making the tough decision to walk away.

She uses each of the verses to describe him as one of the good guys, first as the type who showers her with praise, stays optimistic in their tough situations, etc. And then by showing the affection that her own family has for him in the second verse when she sings:

You bring the same wine to my parent’s house

You know exactly what they want to talk about

Never pretentious, your laugh is infectious

My brother thinks you are the best.”

All these attributes that she’s described, though, are exactly what’s adding up to the confusing emotions she’s carrying with her inside. While walking away from him doesn’t really make any sense on the surface, when you’re just not feeling it, you’re not feeling it! This is exactly what she admits through the questioning of her heart in the chorus:

So why do I cry to every line

When “Still the One” comes on

Why am I driving in silence

When I used to sing along

I wish lovin’ you came so easy

I hate that I have to try

Cuz you don’t, So why do I?”

Though Carolyn Miller is happily married, that’s in part what makes this song so much stronger. She’s clearly having to pull these emotions not from a place she’s at right now, but from somewhere that she’s perhaps been in the past, challenging herself to relive those difficult feelings to give this lyric a truly honest touch that in its way pulls from a fresh perspective of looking back and knowing that you’ll get through the pain, ironically giving it an optimistic flare in the midst of its conflicting struggles.
