There are just some songs that are built for a honky-tonking Friday night dance hall. Jake Bush’s “Better By The Beer” is one of those songs.

With the click of the selection on an old jukebox sliding you into a mono recorded opening as Bush sings the line, “Getting better by the beer,” you are thrust into this ode to the sudsy bar room drink.

Bush pulls you through a boot heel clicking romp as he brings you with him into the bar as he sings lines about soaking up the honky-tonk atmosphere and dropping a twenty on drinks that will go down real smooth.

He later introduces you to all the different types of characters you may find inside of an establishment like this: the guys holding down stools with broken hearts, the girls that hit the dance floor, and the bartender who is talking another guy off the ledge.

However, none of these reasons are why Bush is in the bar on this night. He is there for one reason and one reason only – BEER! And as he clearly states in the chorus, it doesn’t matter if it’s in bottles or cans so long as it’s cold and on ice.

Instrumentation, tempo, and melody wise, “Better By The Beer” is everything that you’d expect from a soon to be barroom favorite, though the prominent sound of steel guitar, which is all too often left out of most modern country songs these days, adds a nice touch to the song.

I fully expect “Better By The Beer” to be in heavy rotation at dance halls across the great state of Texas (where Bush calls home), and I can already hear the DJ’s voice echoing in my head as he calls people to the dance floor with a “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.”
