@ The Clubhouse at Sonny’s in Nashville, TN

(Review By: Jeffrey Kurtis)

As Nashville is in a constant flood of tourists basking in the neon lights of Lower Broadway, local music aficionados tend to look for a place to go during the work week where they can enjoy great food and a libation (or two) while basking in the experience of a song being performed by the writer who poured their heart and soul into crafting it.

Someplace such as The Clubhouse at Sonny’s.

Located in a cozy, corner spot of the three-part Germantown venue, in juxtaposition to their sports bar atmosphere and spacious outdoor patio, Undiscovered Nashville’s ‘Pre-Famous’ has done an incredible job of spotlighting the top tier talent of the emerging songwriting scene inside the Clubhouse at Sonny’s during their now Tuesday night timeslot.

Their unique to Nashville songwriter rounds this summer have already included J. Antonette, Gracie Carol, Levon Gray, and Maddie Lenhart, while their featured artist rounds have delivered Due South, Belles, Daves Highway, Johnny Day, Hailey Dawn, David Tucker, Zac & George, and on this night, Madeline Consoer.

With a very strong night of music having already soaked the atmosphere from the likes of Sarah Lake, Zac Hart, and Julia Larkin, Consoer took the stage as the featured artist in the 9PM spotlight.

The Wisconsin native who calls Nashville home today, is certainly remembered from her stellar run on season 19 of NBC’s The Voice, but she has spent the past year really zoning in on who she is as a songwriter and crafting the direction she wants her next exciting chapter to accelerate, fusing influences of country, rock, pop, and even punk rock into her freshly modern sound which she showered the crowd with during her 30-minute blitz.

Surrounded by two acoustic guitars and the beat of a cajon, all sitting in perfect accompaniment to her incredibly powerful vocal, the full band sound quickly turned the otherwise listening room aura into a rowdy concert slap as she opened her set with the groove laden “Wish It Away,” pumping through the nostalgic flash of the reminiscing lyric, invoking our own youthful memories as she bopped and swayed along in rhythm.

“This is the first love song I’ve ever released,” mused Madeline. “I was in my feels one day,” she smiled as she pulled from her Little Miss EP with the ultra vibey, softer tilt of “Heaven,” hitting the raw, honest edges of her voice into the undeniable feeling of being right where she needs to be when she’s by his side no matter what else might be falling apart around them.

Funking it up a bit, the beat of “1%” instantly grabbed hold of the crowd and had them shoulder dancing with the insatiable rhythm as Madeline pulled heavy from her pop sensibilities while intriguingly riding her vocal into a soulful territory to unveil another layer of her arsenal, while then staying squarely in her groove-filled sweet spot when she kicked into “Write That Song.”

The ultra-catchy “Runnin’ into a Heartbreak” had the entire crowd bouncing as the song popped in all the right places through the chorus as Consoer held everyone in the palm of her hand, singing with a shoulder shrug through the red flags she’s blowing right past in pursuit of what she knows will only end in heartbreak…but one that she can’t resist.

“This is one of my favorite songs that I’ve ever been part of,” she shared as she slowed the pace to a coffeehouse style on “How Do I Not,” bringing the noisy room back down to its listening room atmosphere as she allowed her voice to walk the melody of the heart tugging lyric, pulling proper emotional strings with each slight hint of waver she placed into her voice.

Toasting the crowd as the opening notes of her brand-new single “I Told My Mom About You” radiated the venue, everyone bopped along with the addictive backbeat and sultry playfulness as she commanded the stage with a confidence that channeled her inner Shania, before punching the revenge fueled “Little Miss” with punk infused spite as she slid a blazing, edgy tilt over the crowd to leave a lasting impression with the one-two punch that closed out her set.
