TIN PAN SOUTH (FULL RECAP)

(Review by: Jeffrey Kurtis)

With its uber recognizable worldwide branding as “Music City,” Nashville is the hotspot destination for music aficionados who soak in the melodies that pour out of every bar and honky-tonk, are played on every street corner, and even flow through strategically placed speaker setups as you wait for the red light to change so you can cross a busy downtown intersection.

But the lifeblood that provides the truest heartbeat of the city is always the songwriter!

Upholding the motto set by the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) of “It All Begins With A Song,” the creative community gathers together every day in writing rooms, on living room floors, and in any pocket where a situation could spark the idea that becomes the starting point of the next BIG hit.

From Tuesday March 28, 2023 to Saturday April 1, 2023, the city transformed itself into a vast songwriter haven with the 31st annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival; produced by the NSAI and presented by Regions Bank.

The week-long celebration of songwriters, their craft, and their artistry took over Nashville with an overwhelming 98 shows, which featured over 400 writers in 10 different venues: 3rd & Lindsley, Analog at Hutton Hotel, The Bluebird Café, Commodore Grille, Cross-Eyed Critters Watering Hole, Hard Rock Café, The Listening Room, Live Oak, The Lounge at City Winery, and The Vinyl Lounge.

The perfect blending of current top 40 acts fused together with emerging talents, contemporary Christian mainstays, and hit making songwriters to make this the destination of destinations for those who bask in the process of what it takes to build a song from the ground up.

Recognizable names such as Chris Young, Chase Rice, Mitchell Tenpenny, Maddie & Tae, Dylan Scott, Megan Moroney, Ingrid Andress, Tenille Townes, and Callista Clark, sat in traditional, unique to Nashville songwriter rounds alongside ultra-talented newcomers such as Kassi Ashton, Austin Snell, Madeline Edwards, Griffen Palmer, Dylan Marlowe, and Mae Estes, all who delighted an ultra-receptive crowd night after night with performances of their biggest hits and their newest creations.

The core focus of Tin Pan South, though, is always on those names that you recognize from reading through the credits of your favorite songs; the hitmakers who mostly fly behind the scenes: Lori MacKenna, Jon Nite, Rodney Clawson, Josh Kerr, Ashley Gorley, Matraca Berg, Gary Burr, Casey Barlowe, Jeffrey Steele, Brett James, Kelley Lovelace, and many more!

While it’s impossible to be in 10 places at once every night during the week-long festival, we were able to soak in the electric vibe of the aura that radiated throughout town in the buzz that circled the air, while being privy to having a front row seat for several stellar showcases of the here and now with the what’s coming tomorrow!
