The Texas music scene has icons, and Wade Bowen has certainly earned that status and is near the top of that list. Bowen recently shared that he’d be releasing his first new solo music in over three years with his forthcoming Where Phones Don’t Work EP (November 19, 2021), and he has given us our first taste of it with “When Love Comes Around.”

The song, written by Bowen, Eric Paslay and Heather Morgan, showcases his hopeful and uplifting attitude as he wraps us into a love song that combines a toe tapping melody with his modern country sound, which he fuses perfectly with his traditional Texas bent influences.

“If I were magic, you’d be mystery,” begins the song as Bowen then uses several comparative lines to describe the reasons as to why they are so good together, while also praising her for how she has inspired and changed his outlook on life.

“If I were a Gibson. you’d be a sweet song; always bringing the best out of me.”

“If you were Memphis, I’d be Elvis; Everyday I’d buy you a Cadillac.”

However, the true depth of the lyric is revealed in the chorus, and especially in the hook, where Bowen first encourages, but then challenges us to take down our walls when the opportunity for potential love appears right in front of you:

“Gotta rise when the rain comes down

Gotta dance when the band’s downtown

Gotta get lost to get found

Gotta love when love comes around”

Wanting to incorporate this new crop of music into his live shows, Bowen creatively slides in a clap along moment when the melody takes a hard right in the bridge as he sings, “Gotta wrap my arms around you baby…”

Wade Bowen is an artist who at this point in his career can lean back and rest in the pocket of what he’s always done and be just fine, but as he clearly demonstrates on “When Love Comes Around,” he instead is continuing to challenge himself to put out great new music and we as the listeners are the beneficiary of it.
