DUSTIN LYNCH & ASHLEY COOKE - "How You Been" - BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville

Some country songs begin with a goodbye. “How You Been” starts with a phone call—and suddenly, the past is back on the line. Dustin Lynch and Ashley Cooke turn that ordinary opening into a lively, flirtatious reunion song, capturing the peculiar rush of hearing a familiar voice and realizing that old feelings may not be as distant as expected.

Released October 1, 2026, “How You Been” is the fifth track on Lynch’s seventh studio album, Clean Slate, due October 30. Written by Lynch, Josh Phillips, Ben Williams and Justin Ebach, the song builds its story around an unexpected reconnection. A summer in Myrtle Beach, a first kiss on a Ferris wheel and nights beneath the moon come flooding back as a casual question begins to carry considerably more romantic weight.

Lynch has called the song a “chapter 2” to his 4X Platinum hit “Thinking ’Bout You,” and the connection is easy to hear. That earlier song established the idea of someone from the past occupying the present; “How You Been” takes the premise a step further by putting those two people back in contact. What begins as conversation gradually takes on the possibility of picking up somewhere the relationship once left off.

That setup gives Lynch and Cooke plenty of room to establish chemistry. Lynch brings a relaxed, confident presence to the exchange, while Cooke gives her side of the conversation an expressive, playful edge. Neither performer tries to overpower the other. Instead, they create the sense of two people testing the waters, remembering what once worked and quietly wondering whether it might work again.

The production keeps pace with that uncertainty. “How You Been” moves with brisk, full-band energy, giving the track a loose, immediate quality that keeps the nostalgia from becoming overly sentimental. The arrangement has forward motion, which is important for a song built around looking backward. These memories are not treated as artifacts; they become fuel for whatever might happen next.

Cooke’s presence is particularly effective because she turns the song into more than a Lynch reminiscence. Her vocal perspective makes the romantic possibility feel mutual, while her natural personality adds a playful tension to the exchange. The chemistry is convincing precisely because neither singer pushes the moment too far. The attraction is allowed to reveal itself gradually.

That balance gives “How You Been” a welcome lightness. The song deals with an old relationship, but it is not weighed down by regret. Its memories feel warm rather than wounded, and its central question sounds less like an attempt to reopen an old scar than an invitation to discover whether something unfinished might still have life in it.

As a preview of Clean Slate, the song fits naturally into an album that explores love from several directions, including new possibilities, heartbreak, perspective and second chances. It also gives Lynch another opportunity to explore the kind of romantic storytelling that has been central to his career while bringing Cooke into the conversation in a way that feels organic rather than obligatory.

Ultimately, “How You Been” understands the strange power of an unexpected call: the way a few familiar words can make years feel considerably shorter. Lynch and Cooke give that moment a bright country soundtrack, balancing nostalgia with flirtation and familiarity with just enough uncertainty.

The result is a smart, easygoing duet that leaves its door deliberately open. Sometimes a second chance does not announce itself with a grand gesture. Sometimes it starts with a phone ringing, a familiar voice answering and one deceptively simple question: how you been?
