BRELAND - Icing - Bad Realm Records/Atlantic Records/Warner Music Nashville
PLATINUM artist/songwriter/producer BRELAND has certainly found his niche within the country music genre since first breaking with 2020’s “My Truck”, stretching the boundary lines of his uniquely branded sound to fluently trace outlines of Southern Gospel, old-school soul, hip-hop, and pop.
With his highly anticipated Project 2024 EP on the way next month, he now officially opens his next chapter with “Icing.”
First heard in its football-remix form on CBS’ NFL Today during last week’s season kickoff, the song written by Breland, Jared Griffin, Rufio Hooks, and Autumn Buysse instantly slaps out the gate with a clap-along energy that matches the on-stage explosion of seeing BRELAND perform live; similar to what he did with his earlier song, “Praise The Lord.”
Melodically snapping along as your toes begin to tap in perfect rhythm, the smoothness of BRELAND’s vocal slides in as he uses the opening verse to highlight the character definitions of the women who is everything he wants and more.
However, and while he confesses that he hates to fixate on the surface parts, he also provides a smiled wink when he admits that “she’s the hottest thing in town,” completing the whole package of her having both inner and outer beauty as he pops into the anthem-like strike of the chorus to simultaneously answer the questions of how he got her and how blessed he is because he has.
“Got a good girl from the country
And she got her head on straight
She don't need none of my money
Baby got a 401k
She's got her grandmother's faith
She's got me tryna change her name
Lotta good traits, it don't matter any way you slice it
But the fact she got cake is the icing”
Singing directly to her in the second verse, he playfully teases her to rev his engine up with a little sugar since she decided to put on those Apple Bottom jeans and get him all worked up, placing a naturally healthy flirtation into a relationship picture that continually sees a man praising his woman from an awestricken point of view as falls for her more and more each day.
“I’ve always loved playing around on the periphery of Country music, and ‘Icing’ has all my favorite flavors of Southern Gospel with an old-school Soul flare,” shares BRELAND. “It was a simple concept – this woman has everything you could want; work ethic, faith, a good head on her shoulders, she’s even got a 401k. The fact that she’s got cake is just the icing. Once I hit that run at the end of the chorus, I knew I had to follow it up with a proper SCREAM, because this song is pure energy to me.”
