Lady A gave us a snapshot of things to come when they released What A Song Can Do (Chapter One), a 7-song/first half look into their eighth studio album (arriving October 22, 2021) that featured the title track and the ultra-catchy “Like A Lady” as its singles.

Now ready to complete the 14-song project, they give us our first listen at the second half of the album with their new single “Where Would I Be.”

Written by, David Garcia, Natalie Hemby, and Jordan Terry Minton, “Where Would I Be” leans into all the signatures that have made Lady A one of the top groups of country music: Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley’s amazing lead vocals, perfect harmonies from the entire trio in the chorus, and a softer sound wrapped around tremendous storytelling as this lyric taps into finding that one true love and fondly remembering the moments that you first did.

Scott opens the song by singing of the fateful day that the soon to be couple first met, revisiting back when she spent the summer as a waitress (presumably at a small-town diner) and spilled his drink on him.

A shift in the storytelling occurs in the second verse when Charles Kelley then takes over the leads and sings us through what is an obvious semi-autobiographical part of the song by taking us to a bar in Georgia where he performed his music; and coincidently had the support of his soon to be better half.

Outside of those two intertwining stories, though, the lyric mostly sticks to praising the better half through a series of questions; In the chorus with “where would I be without your love” and “what would I do if I woke up one day and found out this was all a dream,” while later in the bridge they sing:

Without your kiss, without your laugh

Without your life, where would I be?

Without your hand in mine

Without you here, where would I be?

Lady A is one of those groups who will immediately turn heads and perk your ears with every song they release. However, their ability to connect meaningful lyrics with the listener while offering catchy song after catchy song (regardless of the tempo) is what keeps us listening. “Where Would I Be” is the next in line amongst a catalog of songs from Lady A to do just that!
