WALKER HAYES - Ball Player - Monument Records

Back in 2021, Walker Hayes released a song called “Fancy Like”, which would propel his career to an incredible level that has resulted in country radio chart-topping success, writing a book, and selling out venues nationwide.  And while the appeal of the tune that spent more than six months at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart is undeniable, it only serves as a portion of who the Mobile, Alabama native is as a singer and songwriter.

The sentimental side of the hitmaker is once again in full display on the release of a brand-new track.  “Ball Player” is available now, both digitally and on all streaming platforms, via Monument Records.

Written by Hayes along with heavy-hitter songwriters Ben Hayslip, Rhett Akins and Ross Copperman, the tune continues the trend of Walker’s unrelenting approach to drawing inspiration from his real-life experiences.  “Ball Player” serves as a letter to children and their dads, recounting mistakes he feels he has made in his own life with his kids.

“It’s truly humbling, as a father, when you can’t find the words to lift your kids up when they’re down,” Hayes said.  “We wrote something for all our kids.  Reminding them their identity isn’t what they produce on a ball field, on a court, at a job, etc.  They’re more than just ball players.  God has indeed given them the gift of athleticism, but their purpose is bigger than baseball.”

While he has achieved chart-topping mainstream success with his upbeat, ultra-catchy sing-along hits over the past few years, Hayes has also consistently garnered the success of the industry with his ability to set aside the head-bobbing, boot-stomping numbers for the acoustic guitar, personal diary-driven approach to his songwriting.

“Ball Player” focuses on the lyrics, delivered with an articulately poetic approach that puts the listener in the heart and mind of the songwriters.  Detailing and showcasing the imperfections, both internally and externally, of both children and their parents, this song draws on a number of emotions from different perspectives as it weaves through the relatable, down-to-earth lyrics through Walker’s somber undertones and clearly-delivered vocals.

“You ain’t just a ball player

You ain’t just a home run ball on a shelf

You ain’t just a jersey with my last name on it

Just a way to relive it myself

Hope you make it to the bigs someday

‘Cause son, I know that’s your prayer

Bu trust me, and the man upstairs

Nah, you ain’t just a ball player

Love you now and I’ma love you later”

In a very short time, Hayes has instilled himself as a mainstay on the scene with his unique perspective and approach to writing country music.  From the upbeat “You Broke Up With Me” and “Ya’ll Life” to tackling some of life’s toughest issues with “AA”, “Briefcase”, and “Craig”, Walker has found the perfect balance between the light and heavy subjects of life and love, and the success that has enjoyed is a reflection of many of us share his views on real life.

Currently on his headlining The Same Drunk Tour, Hayes currently has dates scheduled into the fall at fairs, festivals, and venues from coast to coast.
