THOMAS RHETT - Overdrive- The Valory Music Co.
As the August 23rd release date draws nearer for Thomas Rhett’s highly anticipated seventh studio album, About A Woman, and its lead single “Beautiful Is You” is nearing the Top 20, he now unveils the next piece of the overall picture with his newest teaser, “Overdrive.”
Following “Feelin’ Country” from the Twisters soundtrack and his recently released song, “Gone Country,” this new tune continues to swirl within the tempo driven flow of feel-good essence that Rhett set out to design for the new album.
“From top to bottom, I wanted to exude joy and fun with this project – and really just make people move. I went into making this record with a fearless attitude, put my blinders on and my head down to try and make really fun music.”
Pulling through the summer flashback that shifted his entire life, Rhett nostalgically weaves the pinpointed moment that the girl, presumably his wife Lauren, took the initiative to make the move that made his heartbeat faster.
Over a sway along bounce that’s naturally laced within the pop laden aura of the backbeat, Rhett asks in the opening verse, “How could I forget that night,” before he then paints the picture of her breathtaking beauty and the phone call that changed his plans.
“I was about to go and crash the party with the guys
When she called me up and said can you pick me up tonight”
Exuding his heart-raced emotions into the chorus alongside a hip popping lift in melody that immediately gets the listener bopping along, Rhett cleverly matches the pedal to the floor drive to her house with that of his increasing heartbeat with each next turn:
“I put that '04 F-150 right into overdrive
Like a bat outta hell with them JBL’s working overtime
Yeah, I'm high beaming down a backroad
Tire’s screaming, I’m getting close
Tryna do the limit but my heart doing way more than 65
On that baby I’m coming over drive
On that baby I’m coming over drive”
Detailing how their budding love story played out on that particular night, “the start of us,” he flips through the memory induced photo album with smiled mentions of her heels getting in the mud, him having to carry her to the truck on his shoulders, them both smelling like bonfire smoke, and heading off to be somewhere alone together.
Though we’re currently in the start of the dog days of summer, “Overdrive” stands tall as a very strong contender to be the definitive song of summer as it carries the perfect beat, catchiness, and relatability to connect with the listener and keep them tuning in again and again while cranking the volume and surfing their arm along the highway wind as they drive with the windows rolled down.
