KASSI ASHTON - Son Of A Gun - MCA Nashville/Interscope Records
Having hyped tremendous intrigue with her breakthrough single “Drive You Outta My Mind,” and through her most recent outpouring of songs, “Called Crazy” and “I Don’t Wanna Dance,” ACM nominated Kassi Ashton has now set the buzz level to even greater heights with the official announcement of full-length debut album, Made From The Dirt (out September 20, 2024).
Correlating with her BIG announcement, she continues to tease the album with the brand-new song, “Son Of A Gun.”
Written by Kassi, Jason Nix, and Driver Williams, the song swerves from the moody overtones and bluesy backdrops that we’ve grown accustomed to from her, to instead, hit into a pulsating rhythmic drive that leans against a shred of guitars, an irresistible backbeat, and the uniqueness of her voice to expertly combine in tone with the rebellious lyric.
Painting the photographic snapshot of her life so far, she autobiographically trails her parents love story, kissed in opposites attract notions and a gasoline and matches fusion, spotlighting each of their individual personalities and the distinctive traits that they would pass onto her.
Landing the ultra-catchy chorus into a fist pumped, anthem like lift she weaves descriptives of her sweetly outlined rebel personality in an unbridled showing of the bits and pieces of her parent’s spirit that lives and breathes within who she is at her core today:
“Sweet fruit from the tree
Hemlock on the tongue
Raised from some roots
That I can’t outrun
My mama’s blue ribbon
My daddy’s first song
I’m a son of a bitch
And the son of a gun”
While the opening half of the song sets the foundations of her life, the second half moves the story through her upbringing and into a boldly drawn picture of the here and now as she leads into an insatiable clap along moment through the final chorus.
Kassi Ashton has always walked a unique line, never quite fitting to the mold while completely excelling within it by being so different. But by never fully committing to one side of the line or the other, the branding of rock edge and modern country smoothness with “Son Of A Gun” stretches into a territory we haven’t heard from her thus far, showcasing the risks she’s willing to take while adding another strong layer to the arsenal of things still to come.
