David J - Rest Of Your Life - Runner Music/Sony Music Nashville

Ever since the Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) led Runner Music combined efforts with Sony Music Nashville on the career trajectory of 19-year-old, multi-instrumentalist David J, it’s been one right move after the other in positioning the phenom for a breakout year in 2024.

The second half of 2023 saw David’s star continue to rise, making impact with well over 1 million streams on each of his hotly received releases: “Last Time,” “Traffic on a Backroad,” “Heartbroken,” and “After We Broke Up.”

He now kicks off the new year with “Rest Of Your Life.”

Uniquely bending genre lines, stretching them to the farthest realms of modern era country and radio flavored pop, though softer in its pacing, the song straddles with crossover potential through its vibey feels and lyrical play on the uber relatable idea of when you know you know.

Written by David and Ryan Tedder, the song hits first with its chorus to set forth the head over heels, leap of faith emotion from its onset, thus popping the BIG question in the opening line:

“What are you doing for the rest of your life?

I don’t need another day to know this is right

I’m not trying to rush you, but I’m done wasting time

So tell me

What are you doing for the rest of, for the rest of your life?”

Giving definition to who he was before her, and more importantly how she changed all of his plans when she showed up in his life, the verses paint the picture that led him straight to her; lamenting first that “I’ve been lost and I’ve been down every broken road, never thought I’d find a smile that I call home” while then wisely putting his full trust in God to do the rest, “Started with your name, I trusted God He would do the rest, now you’re something more than a kiss I won’t forget.”

Sealing their love story with the transparent reason behind his ask in that strong first line of the chorus, “what are you doing for the rest of your life?,” he expertly crafts in the bridge the outline of his thoughts by explaining how he can’t help but envisioning her all dressed up in white.

Why question something when it feels right? Where so many people will take the time to make sure that it’s 100% before taking this type of leap of faith, what they’re really mostly doing is trying to find out what could be wrong as they build a wall of protection around their heart. David J swerves that entire thought process to listen instead to his quickly beating heart that’s telling him it’s 100% right without question.
