Throughout his entire career, Tim McGraw has been a chameleon. He’s been adaptable, took several outside chances, stayed true to himself, and has always risen to the top no matter how the mainstream radio trends may change.

His newest song “7500 OBO,” the third official radio release from his latest album Here On Earth, continues to showcase McGraw’s ability to stay relevant amongst changing trends by standing strong on a solid lyric and using the conviction in his outstanding voice to deliver the emotion of it.

Plain and simple, the lyric sees McGraw (as the narrator) having to sell his truck – but even more so, the memories that come with it of a past relationship that still haunts him.

He runs us down a newspaper ad list of all the things about the truck to open the song: it’s a dark blue F-150 in good condition, has 119K miles on it, a new transmission, leather seats, and a sunroof. He then shifts gears with the last line of the verse towards the “why” he is selling it for 7500 or the best offer (OBO) when he sings, “Every time I turn that key, I see her…”

The chorus, and the remainder of the song, then winds us through the memories that he keeps with her every time he’s in the truck: from seeing her fix her lips in the drop-down mirror, to her having her hand out the window floating it on the breeze, seeing the dent on the bumper from when she backed it into the mailbox, etc.

In true Tim McGraw fashion, he strikes the proper chord of the lyrics through the pain you feel in his voice, while he uses the classic country instrumentation of pedal steel and fiddle to deliver all the right feels.

Tim McGraw is one of country music’s biggest superstars for several reasons, but the most important has always been his ability to find great songs that will resonate with the listener. That’s exactly what he’s done again on “7500 OBO.”
