When you bring two very dynamic country artists together for a duet, the expectations are immediately set on a higher level. And for the first-time ever in their careers, Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood have come together on “If I Didn’t Love You” and give us our first taste of Aldean’s 10th studio album.

The song, written by Jason’s bandmates Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy with John Morgan and Lydia Vaughn, hits radio right on the heels of Aldean notching his very impressive 25th #1 with “Blame It On You.”

The mid-tempo song leans into a lyric filled with heartache that focuses on the trouble each are facing with moving on in the aftermath of a break-up, and couples it together with a build in the pounding of the drums and the clashes of guitars that helps to perfectly encompass the proper emotions.

Aldean kicks things off in the opening verse when he sings of how he wouldn’t mind being alone, wouldn’t keep checking his phone, and wouldn’t be losing sleep. Underwood does likewise in the second verse as she sings of how she wouldn’t still cry sometimes, wouldn’t have to fake a smile, or be the state that she’s in.

However, both verses are cleverly designed to lead you to the chorus where it’s punched home that each is in fact doing all these things because they’re still in love with each other and can’t seem to find the ways to turn their feelings off.

Underwood and Aldean are pros that understand exactly how to use their vocals in a song, and they both tap into the vastly different weights of their voices to help elevate the pain and heartache of this lyric.

With both artists having such very visible marriages, it’s an amazing feat how easily they both make you see past what we know about them to be true and pull you directly into believing exactly what they are feeling for one another as they sing.

Just as he did with Kelly Clarkson on 2010’s “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” Jason Aldean will take this duet with Carrie Underwood to the top of the charts to give him his 26th #1.
