With the recent announcement of “NASHVILLE” The Reunion Tour, coupling with a hot performance of “One Good Move” on the Kelly Clarkson Show that hyped his forthcoming debut album, Charles Esten has been pushed back into the spotlight in monumental ways and has a noticeable buzz swirling around him and his music.

Continuing to ride that wave of momentum, he now releases “A Little Right Now.”

Written by Esten with Jacob Lydda and Brian Maher, the song delivers on the very topical subject of faith; not so much about not having it, as much as needing to recapture the way you carried it when everything was going well in a season that might now be a little darker.

The dusty strum of the guitar through the intro perfectly lends itself to the roots branded country style that Esten encompasses, allowing the rawness that’s built into his naturally gravel tilt to add perfect depth to the lyrics.

By focusing on specific people and they’re needs from God through each of the verses, Esten subtly strikes the right chord that gets us thinking about our own needful situations to start the uncomfortable rumbling inside ourselves:

“I’m a farmer praying for rain”

“I’m a sailor hoping for a gust of wind”

“I’m a singer looking for that song”

“I’m a begger who could use some help”

However, it’s the masterful way that he inserts his faith struggle into the line “I’m a seeker searching for myself,” that we get the true depth of the lyric as it’s clearly revealed that he’s not giving up on God during his struggles, but pressing in and trying to get a deeper understanding of them, which then makes the cry out in prayer through the chorus that much more powerful:

“Lately all my roads have been running out

And there ain’t no silver linings in these clouds

Help me Lord and show me how

To find the kind of faith I once found

Cause I could sure use a little right now”

We all struggle with our faith sometimes in the natural. Situations we face don’t always make sense and we begin to question how setbacks can be the setups to our next great chapter. Charles Esten transparently puts himself into that anxious feeling of when we find ourselves tightly gripping our faith but losing it at the same time, giving us a song that becomes the bold, encouraging reminder to just hold on!
