One of the finest compliments and attributes of country music is its ability to appeal to so many different types of fans.  Over the years of course, the genre has dynamically transcended the formally rigid musical boundaries and has expanded to include elements of nearly every other genre, including pop, rock, even R&B and rap.

For some, this has been met with stark criticism.  But who cares about those people?!  We love country music…the way it was, the way it is, and the way it will be.  We like it, we love, and we want some more of it!

Enter self-proclaimed “grunty” artist Sophia Scott.  No, that is not a typo.  It is the perfect combination of grunge and country, something that the EMPIRE NASHVILLE recording artist embraces with pride and confidence, as it accurately portrays who she is as a songwriting and performer.

Her latest single, “Her”, is a tale of emotional tragedy and relationship fatality.  The song finds her in the arms of the one she loves, all the while knowing that those feelings are not reciprocated.  She knows that the person she is with wants to be with someone else, and the thoughts and emotions that are experienced take center stage throughout this vulnerably somber track.

“And I hate the way that I’m your second best

I’d die to be yours and with every breath

I wish that you could know how much it hurts

Cuz the way I feel about you

Is how you feel about her”

Sophia’s vocals are incredibly delivered, perfectly capturing the vibe of the song.  Her voice is truly unique and shines as bright as ever on this harrowingly account of love gone wrong which will surely strike a chord with a lot of us.

While country music has always been an influence for the singer-songwriter since a very young age, the fact that she did not grow up in the south brings her approach to songwriting from a different angle.  The elements of grunge, rock, pop, and others are prevalent here, but the storytelling nature of the track along with the undeniable relatability find its home right here in country music.

“Her” is Sophia’s first release of the year, following “If I Hadn’t Been Drunk” in 2022 as well as the release of her ‘One Of These Days’ EP, featuring the singles “More Me, “One Of These Days”, and “Sweetheart”.
