With his insatiable drawl, slicked back brown hair, and on-stage movements that get the women in the crowd screaming, Drake Milligan understandably earned the nickname of “New Elvis of Country” as he recently took over our television screens when he performed “Sounds Like Something I’d Do” on this season of America’s Got Talent; a comparison that makes perfect sense seeing as though his introduction to most music aficionados came through his turn at portraying a young version of the “King of Rock-N-Roll” on CMT’s Sun Records.

With millions now watching him and talking about his music, in a wise move that upholds the notion of striking while the iron’s hot, Milligan’s label home has pushed “Sounds Like Something I’d Do” to country radio and satisfies the itch of the honky-tonk loving crowd with this boot heel clickin’ barn burner.

The song, co-written by Milligan with Brett Beavers and Terry McBride, allows Drake’s rich vocal to lean into a lyric through the opening verse that runs down a list of risky behaviors that perfectly sum up his attitude, ranging from staying out at a little too late at the honky-tonk, to ditching work when the fish are biting and taking the curves a little faster than the posted speed limit.

All of these admitted single guy type of behaviors, though, are put in place by design so that they lead to the chorus where Milligan twists away from the risk taker that he used to be to paint the picture of the one he’s willing to become for that special someone who has now entered his life, as he flirtatiously confesses:

I never had a reason, girl
To go 'round lookin' for a fire to walk through
It ain't like me to want somebody
Rearrangin' all my want-to's
I ain't the kind to settle down
And let myself get wrapped around
Somebody's finger, but if I had you
Baby, sounds like somethin' I'd do

With a clear influence from 90’s country superstars such as John Michael Montgomery and Wade Hayes shining through this song, Milligan snuggly fits into today’s era of country music to fill a void on the back of a modern throwback sound that uses a rhythm in its tempo to ignite the Friday night dancehall floors with a two-stepping groove.

Drake Milligan’s debut album Dallas/Fort Worth is due out on September 15, 2022.
