Charly Reynolds made a huge mark on the crowded country music scene with the catchy, clap along with modern infused tempo of her last single “Rodeo” as she’s continued cutting her teeth with high profile shows at Nashville hot spots including Ole Red and The Skydeck at Assembly Food Hall.

She now returns with “Tonight in Texas.”

For all intents and purposes, this is a broken hearted/trying to move on by keeping myself distracted type of song, but where most others of this lyrical content lean on a slower, heart-tugging pace, Reynolds intriguingly swerves the typically predictable to deliver an upbeat, catchy tune that immediately makes her boldly stand out as uniquely different from the pack.

With a decisively 90’s country sound as the backbeat, Reynolds twists in all the right modern splashes to give this a fresh vibe, so that she never sounds dated or out of touch with what’s going on today, but still carries a refreshing throwback style.

Preparing for a girls night out at a bar where her friends motive is bent on cheering her up in the aftermath of the breakup, Reynolds immediately sets the scene as she brings us into her distracted frame of mind while she’s getting ready for their night out, but she also paints the picture of what that night will look like, from her friend Hailey wanting to ride the mechanical bull, to them wanting to sing Karaoke and dance all night long.

Reynolds is quick to reveal that her mind is someplace completely different; on the one that got away that’s now in Texas while she’s still living in Tennessee. She runs us through all the different anxieties that are going through her mind about what might be happening miles away, singing in the chorus of him being at a bar in Dallas and moving on to someone new as he sips whiskey and sings along with the song while spinning the new girl around on the dance floor, leading to Reynolds confession that she’s “wishing it was me still in his arms and in his dreams” while admitting that she “can’t help it, livin’ in those memories.”

Very cleverly, Reynolds utilizes her voice in such a riveting way so that it completely matches the lyrics line for line as they sing of her hiding her truest, heartbreak feelings while pretending to be happy as her voice radiates through our speakers allowing the listener to vividly see her smiling – albeit a fake one, as she’s clearly hurting on the inside.
