Kolby Cooper is no stranger to country music fans, especially those who are tuned into the Texas Music scene, having already earned substantial airplay at the Lonestar State’s major market radio with several songs including “Boy From Anderson County,” “Good For You,” “One Night Stand,” and “Way To Go.”

The incredible regional success he’s already experienced has now led Cooper to make a big move towards national airplay as he blurs the line between the distinguishable Texas style while filtering in just enough Nashville flare to give him a solid shot at immediate Top 40 success with his current release, “Excuses.”

Written by Cooper with Brett Tyler and Jordan Walker, the softer pacing as the song begins perfectly accents the overall vibe of the lyrics to absolutely add an air of sadness into Cooper’s vocals as he opens the song with the simplicity of the line, “What just happened?” while immediately setting into play his confusion.

Cooper then swirls his voice into the myriad of emotions that are experienced during a blindsided break-up as he begins to wonder why it even had to end through lines in the opening verses that sees him questioning her heart, “I thought we were on the same road, in the fast lane?”

That initial softer pacing in the instrumentation begins to expertly build alongside Cooper’s vocals as he runs through a list of the throw away, flimsy excuses that she’s given him as the reasons for their split; “It ain’t you, it’s me,” “You deserve someone better,” etc. Allowing him to then punch into the chorus as the music hits its peak and he connects heart to heart with the listener who’s experienced this type of heartbreak, stopping her worn out lines to frustratingly tell her that all he’s hearing are excuses that are loaded down with BS.

The Second verse sees Cooper tilting more into the hurting frustration of time wasted together as he metaphorically shakes his head in disbelief and questions how she can even be standing there right now looking him in the eye as if she cares.

Kolby Cooper’s Texas success was certainly enough to catch the attention of the music industry here in Music City and land him a record deal with Wheelhouse. However, it’s his amazing ability to know all the right ways to utilize his vocals and convey the proper emotions he’s battling through on a lyric like this, that will act as the signature showcase of transparent honesty to help him secure his status as one to watch as he opens the first chapter of his national success story.
