Mitchell Tenpenny is one of country music hottest artists right now.

With his very highly anticipated, 20-song album This Is The Heavy releasing in less than a month, on the same week that he announced his upcoming headlining tour and hit the #1 spot on the chart alongside Chris Young with “At the End of a Bar,” Mitchell now drops another teaser from his album with “Good and Gone.”

The song, co-written by Tenpenny, Zach Abend, Seth Ennis, and Geoff Warburton, swerves away from the head over heels in love feelings we got from his last teaser “Always Something With You,” and shifts into remorseful emotions that arrive when it really starts to sink in that the breakup is for real this time.

Setting the tone from the get-go with a frantic driven pace to the melody, Tenpenny first rationalizes that how every time they fight, she says she’s leaving but never makes it out of the driveway. However, he then quickly reveals all the reasons why this time might be different; there weren’t any teardrops, no angry texts sent to him, Etc.

His anxiousness starts to flood his mind when he admits that she’s now scaring him to death while driving the song into the chorus where he sings of exactly how he plans to cope with her leaving:

First, it’s whiskey shots, then smoking everything I got

Next comes punching holes in walls then blaming everything on God

I’m going off the rails, won’t take me very long

‘Cause if you’re gone for good

Then I’m getting good and gone

Continuing to internalize his own shortcomings as more time passes and she’s still not returned, Tenpenny confesses to himself that maybe this time he did push her to the edge and cries out into the final chorus through his hurt, “you made up your mind and I don’t want you on mine tonight.”

The tempo driven speed of the song gives it an extra special touch and helps it stand out uniquely in comparison to the softer pace that we normally get with lyrical content like this. By expertly doing this instrumentally, the growing anxious feeling of his vocal is drawn out that much more and adds a realistic element that enhances the overall vibe.

Most importantly, just as he’s already done with his current single “Truth About You,” “Elephant in the Room,” and “Always Something With You,” Tenpenny gives us another intriguing song with “Good and Gone” that stands to further heighten our anticipation for the forthcoming album ahead of its official release.
