With his last single, the upbeat “When It Comes To Love,” Blaine Holcomb solidified his modern kissed, 90’s country inspired sound and accelerated forward on his path toward the buzzworthy status tag that began when he first turned heads with his 2021 EP Over A Beer

He now teams up with Kinsey Rose, a recent alum of The Voice, to release his brand-new single,  “Lessons.”

In the vein of the late 2000’s era of country music, wrapped around a waltz like instrumentation, Holcomb weaves us through a lyric that takes the approach of a wise man passing down to the next generation all the life lessons that he’s learned, singing through the verses of how a bully won’t back down until you stand up to them, that holding a grudge will only make you bitter, and that if given the chance to go fishing with your dad or to share a cup of coffee with your mom, make sure you do it because life is short.

Kinsey Rose slides mostly into the harmony role which gives this song a very rich texture, however, on the last verse she adds the female perspective to the warning of breaking a good woman’s heart when she sings, “Don’t break her heart if you know you love her, don’t let her leave cause you’re too damn stubborn,” which results in the ramifications being spelled out when Holcomb chimes back in with “cause she’ll move on and you’ll regret it.”

The poignant moments - the Cliff Notes if you will – arrive at the end of each verse with the teachable moments that sing of how hurts can be a lesson and happiness isn’t in possessions, before providing a shot of encouragement through the chorus:

You can’t win em all

You can’t change the past

Don’t take for granted what you got

Don’t always want what you don’t have

Take some chances, have some faith

Make the most of everyday

Cause it could all be over in a second

Songs like this were all over country radio about a decade ago and resonated so much with the listener. Though these types of songs have sort of disappeared into the background of the country music landscape over the past few years, you must wonder as you’re listening to “Lessons” if these aren’t the exact things that so many need to learn again right now, and if it’s not the perfect moment for songs like this to be re-emerging to the forefront of country radio!
