Megan Mullins Owen has used her song releases in 2022 as a brilliant showcase of her extreme versatility by hitting the edge of a western swing style on “This Good Is Gettin’ Better” and dipping into a 90’s country flare on “One of These Days.”

However, right down the middle of that versality also sits a modern country infused style that is perfectly suited for today’s country radio as we’ve heard on songs such as the heart-tugging “He Breaks Things” and the incredibly catchy “Trampoline.”

As part of the CCB Nashville #newmusicfriday initiative, Megan Mullins Owen has just kicked of the month of June with “Never Been Good at Letting Go,” a song that absolutely hits a bullseye on the modern mark and will continue to elevate her status.

The catchy tempo leans into an up and down strum of guitar that smashes into her signature fiddle to flow together seamlessly and immediately get your toes tapping and hips shaking right out the gate.

Once drawn in by its catchiness, Mullins Owen then utilizes her endearingly crisp vocal to lead us through verses chalk full of lines that sing of all the different, somewhat questionable things, that she always tends to do, all pointing to her holding on to things that are no good for her just a little too long:

“I tend my to burn my fingers on my cigarettes.”

“I tend to stare at the sun, til it drives me blind.”

“I like to tie myself, to a sinking boat.”

All of this is ultimately designed, though, to be cleverly compared to the heartbreak she causes herself as she initially reveals in the opening verse, “Sometimes I love too long, it always makes me cry,” which perfectly provides the preview of the chorus and her biggest downfall:

I’ve never been good at letting go

I don’t know when to quit, don’t know how to fold

I’m the first one to rock, and the last one to roll

I’ve never been good at letting go

No, I’ve never been good at letting go.”

The clap along moment that leads into the final chorus gives the song an automatic audience participation moment, which makes this not only perfect for country radio, but also an easy song for Megan to slide into her live performances to engage the crowd.

With each song release from Megan Mullins Owen this year, she seems to be following a pattern that first shows off her all-around talent, while then pulling into a decisively modern sound that is captivating to today’s country music fan while still carefully holding her signatures tight enough into the mix so as to not abandon her early 2000’s country tilt and the fan base that also loves her for that sound.
