When Latin-infused country artist Andrea Vasquez made her Song Suffragettes debut about a month ago, we were blessed with the opportunity to be there in person for it. We knew her music through her powerful single “Made Me Cry,” but in an intriguing turn of events, Vasquez utilized her debut performance to play mostly new material, including her brand-new single “Reverse.”

The song, co-written by Vasquez with Taylor O’Connor, takes us through lyrics that play on the idea of reminiscing on a relationship that has since left you broken hearted, first by dangerously making you remember the good times, but then by masterfully gut punching into the current hurt and pain that’s left you helplessly wishing you could go back and fix everything so that it doesn’t end up like where it actually has.

Riding round, windows down, my feet up on your dash,” opens the song and immediately paints the summertime picture of young love blossoming as we vividly see them together in a specific moment of time when they were driving around without a destination in mind, making a strong memory with his hand holding hers.

However, the song moves quickly out of the past highs and brings us into the right now lows when she reveals how hearing a song always takes her back to when they were happy together, perfectly leading us into the chorus where the mood shifts as she sings:

Wish we could put it in reverse

Then we could avoid this hurt

Went from you always calling

Now my tears keep on falling

Wish we could put it in reverse

Is it just me?

Did we move on completely?

This can’t get any worse

Wish we could put it in reverse.”

The second verse then further explores her current hurt as she begins to run through a gamut of different emotions with lines that spell out her confusion such as “Never thought you’d hurt me like that,” while continuing to tap into her current pain in the bridge where she desperately cries out, “Why did it have to crash and burn?”

What Andrea Vasquez does so well with “Reverse” is to really allow the tilts in her vocals to dig into all the different, very real emotions that naturally surface in the aftermath of a break-up; from fondly looking back, to feeling the sharp pains in the here and now, while allowing her wounded heart to cry out in the wishing that she could change things even though she knows she can’t. Pulling all these very real feelings together the ways that she has, allows the song to naturally resonate with the listener as it emotionally connects to their own broken heart.
