CARLY PEARCE
"What He Didn't Do"
Big Machine Records
Country music starlet Carly Pearce has released “What He Didn’t Do” via Big Machine Records. The tune has been a favorite amongst fans of ’29: WRITTEN IN STONE’ as well as the thousands of concert-goers who have seen her at fairs, festivals, clubs, and stadiums over the past year.
Written by Pearce along with Ashley Gorley and Emily Shackleton, the subject matter is unapologetically congruent with most of the music in her catalogue over the past year or so – a direct reflection and reaction to her whirlwind romance and brief marriage. It offers yet another perspective on a love gone wrong.
When we hear that a relationship ends, some might ask the question, “What did he do?”. Pearce and her cowriters creatively alter the narrative, introducing a thought-provoking idea of the stark meaning behind the inaction, rather than an action.
As usual, Carly’s voice is on point, stretching her vocal ability flawlessly, while perfectly encapsulating the somber vibe of the tune. The lyrics, of course, are subdued and relatable, telling the story of her heartbreak without the specifics.
“The devil’s in the details
I won’t tell the hell that he put me through
All I know is in the end, it wasn’t what he did, no
It was what he didn’t do”
By the end of the song, she has come to the realization that the failed relationship was not due to any fault of her own, while setting new standards for the next time she falls in love. It’s a self-proclaimed song of hope and learning from mistakes before moving forward.
There are few artists in the industry right now with as much momentum as Carly Pearce. She has been headlining her own gigs from the end of 2021 through the spring, while also playing fairs and festivals along with Kenny Chesney’s HERE AND NOW 2022 Tour of stadiums and amphitheaters through the summer.
