Kimberly Kelly made an immediate splash on the country music scene when she released “Summers Like That,” the first preview of her forthcoming album I’ll Tell You What’s Gonna Happen (due out July 8, 2022).

The nostalgic vibe of the song saw Kelly reminiscing as she took us through some of the biggest moments of her life in a “Strawberry Wine” like fashion that defined who she became today while allowing all the room within the lyrics for us as the listener to attach our own stories to it.

She’s now teasing us again with “Blue Jean Country Queen,” a song written by Kelly, Brett Tyler, and Steve Wariner that pulls from a strong 1970s country influence while smashing its overall feel into a late 90’s/early 2000’s female country tilt.

With its stellar throwback feel, the whine of the fiddle and the incredibly familiar style in the guitar that Steve Warniner drops in both prominently stand out while being expertly careful to never overshadow Kelly’s crisp vocal delivery as she waves through a story song full of sass and confidence.

Using vivid details to spell out the attitude of the female subject of the song, Kelly describes her throughout the verses/chorus as having a Farrah Fawcett smile, being a real-life barbie doll, and the type who can make the band (and patrons) stop what they’re doing to look at the blue jean queen who is out looking for her king, tonight!

Having already painted the picture as to who the subject in the looks department, Kelly continues unravelling the scene inside the honky-tonk as we roll into the second verse and she sings of how she hasn’t had to pay for a beer yet and how all the fellas watch her when she hits the dance floor for a two-step.

However, her turn their heads antics result in her simply having playful fun and nothing more as Kelly sings the confession, “she ain’t met a cowboy yet, that knows how to handle her,” insinuating that for our subject, this is all just another flirtatious night out on the town.

With several references made to the stereotypical 1970’s country girl image throughout the song, coupled together with additional classic country stylings from Steve Wariner and Kimberly Kelly’s throwback styled vocal, she delivers a very intriguing song that builds on what we’ve previously heard from her and acts as a brilliant showcase of what to expect from her album as a whole; a refreshing country sound that smoothly combines her Texas roots with a decisively vintage Nashville sound.
