Eric Durrance is no stranger to country music fans. He’s found monumental success as a songwriter with Jake Owen’s “Eight Second Ride,” and has carved out a very strong following over the past decade as the front man of The Tobacco Rd. Band.

However, as he’s always done throughout his entire career, whenever he writes a song that hits on a much deeper emotional tug that leans across the line into something a little more personal and doesn’t necessarily fit the overall feel of his band - such as with “She’s Getting’ On with Her Life” - rather than throwing the song away, Durrance will release it as a solo artist.

That’s what he’s done with “Looking Back Girl.”

Being a smart writer that always stays up with the current trends so as to never sound out of touch with the here and now, “Looking Back Girl” is still really the first song from Durrance that splices in a fully modern feel that comes complete with some pop laden electronic elements, making this slightly different than what we’ve come to expect from him by offering a very fresh take as he perfectly slides into new territory within’ his solid signature sound.

The basis for the song is a fight between him and his girl that forced their inevitable split, but by never really delving into what caused the fight, the regret filled lyric can then stay firmly planted in the current emotional moment of him looking back on what he left unsaid that could’ve been the exact things that saved their relationship had he said them.

He sings us through tug at your heart lines in the opening verse that focus on what he could’ve done differently, while also expertly travelling through the wide range of confusing emotions that arrive in these moments as he beats himself up by saying how easy it could’ve been to just wrap her in his arms, etc.

However, it’s the lasting memory of the look she gave him that begged him to stop her leaving that fueled the regret he now feels today as he sings in the chorus:

From the porch to your car was 15 feet

Tears that you showed digging for your keys

Gave me every chance to save what we had

Wish I woulda done that when you were lookin’ back girl.”

An emotion that he further reiterates in the bridge when he sings, My whole world stopped when your taillights didn’t, Now all I see’s what I coulda done different.”

This song is a bold showcase of what Eric Durrance does best. He taps into pure emotions that we all experience in our lives and then takes us into the heart of them in such a relatable way that the listener can’t help but be invested in the song. Couple that connection factor with his willingness to think outside his normal box to achieve something that raises him and his songwriting up to another level and “Looking Back Girl” is another strong release from Eric Durrance that radio would be wise to not ignore.
