Nashville’s known amongst its music inhabitants as a true songwriter’s town. Stages that welcome writers - those who are the new faces to Music City as well as the veterans - can be found in every nook and cranny of the city and on any given night that you’re in the audience, you’ll be blessed with the opportunity to hear their newest compositions within an intimate setting.

However, underneath that rich layer of what makes Nashville tick, songwriters often experience the fact that it’s a “10-year town.” A songwriter will most likely feel at times like they’re spinning their wheels as they settle into Nashville and are starting over at the bottom in comparison to where they just left behind to get here.

Those are the exact emotions that Madeline Edwards captures on her newest song, “Port City,” our first look at her forthcoming debut project which is due out later this year.

The autobiographical song, which is co-written by Edwards, Court Clement, and Josh Moore, takes us through the up and down emotions of Edwards’ own journey that her and her husband experienced when they relocated to Music City from Texas to chase music dreams on a wing and a prayer.

The softer tone of the instrumentation adds a moody element to the gripping melody, but it skillfully allows for Edwards outstanding vocals to really stand in the spotlight as they grab hold of the lyrics and convey their transparent honesty.

She confesses early on that when she turned 13, “I thought I knew everything about who I was gonna be or where I’d be right now,” and then continues to face harsh realities as she further unravels humble discoveries as to who she is at this moment of the journey in the here and now:

“I don’t know where I’ll land.”

“Sometimes, I feel lost in my own mind.”

“Feels like I’m drowning, the water is over my head.”

However, as is par for the course whenever humbling yourself, Edwards also uses this song to reach back to the ones who are about to start their own journey in life (music or otherwise) and with one very well-placed shot of encouragement, “if I don’t sink now, I may never learn to swim,” she wraps comforting arms around the dreamers as an understanding friend that knows exactly what emotions they’re facing.

Though “Port City” is an autobiographical song for Edwards, she really showcases her songwriting talent by tackling the emotions in a vague enough fashion that they allow the perfect amount of room to inject your own personal story into hers as she pushes you to preserve through your bold life changes to get to the other side of the dream you started chasing!
