Multi-platinum recording artist Jake Owen has become the go-to summertime/good vibes guy in country music over his past few albums and single releases. But what Owen has arguably done better than anyone else right now, is find ways to walk right down the middle of an irresistible, sway along with tempo to still deliver very strong lyrics that effectively tug at your heart strings dependent on the song.

That’s exactly what he’s done again on “Fishin’ On A River.”

The song, written by David Fanning, Drew Parker and Cole Taylor, absolutely delivers the summertime catchiness that we’d want from Owen this time of year while perfectly delivering the vibe heavy groove.

However, this isn’t just another feel-good song built for the warmer weather months, but rather a lyrical masterpiece that finds him using many intriguing comparative lines between his expectation of fishing on a river versus what he’s really doing instead; sitting on a barstool drinking over the one that got away.

He paints pictures of their planned fishing trip during the onset of the song, singing of having already gone to the bait shop, filling up the tackle box, having his good rods loaded up, etc. However, one expertly placed line that leads out of the opening verse, changes the entire direction of the song when he sings, “I was ready to go, and it turned out she was too.”

From here forward, we get Owen reverting to a barstool instead of the riverbank as he tugs on our hearts with amazing comparative lines:

Wettin’ my whistle, instead of wetting my line.”

Catching me a buzz, not catching me a bass.”

I oughta be tired of throwing them back by now.”

Though he never says the reasons that she left him, he transparently admits that he doesn’t even know where it went wrong; a sentiment that many who are going through a break-up will easily relate to.

With his most current single “Best Thing Since Backroads” climbing the charts, “Fishin’ On A River” follows the earlier release of “Drunk On A Boat,” allowing all three tracks to work together as a very solid preview of his highly anticipated, forthcoming album, thus creating an amazing buzz ahead of its release!
