Love, or more appropriately for this song, falling in love with someone who is already with somebody else is tough – especially when you can see from your outside perspective how they are being mistreated in comparison to what you know you would bring to a relationship with them.

Though Tyler Rich gave us “Better Than You’re Used To” back at Valentine’s Day, the song is officially heading to country radio in mid-May.

Written by Rich, Corey Crowder, and Alysa Vanderheym, “Better Than You’re Used To” offers a smooth groove in the melody that will not only instantly catch the listener’s attention, but one that also perfectly allows room for the yearning of Rich’s vocals to fully encompass the message of the lyric.

“He don't deserve you, He says I love you, But I don't believe it no way,” opens the song and sets in motion the later comparisons to what the girl would have if she would leave the wrong guy to come over to him and let him love her right.

He reveals a list of things that he’s noticed the guy she’s with does (or doesn’t do) including, not sending her roses on Valentine’s Day, not taking her dancing, and making her his 2AM last call rather than putting her first.

In contrast, Rich sings through the chorus of how she actually deserves to be treated and what he wants to give to her when he sings, “You should be the spotlight, center of attention,” “I would give my all girl if I had you,” and “you need someone to love, love, love you better than you’re used to.”

The song could end like that and be a solid song, but Rich rather has taken this to a great level by including a call to action in the bridge instead of allowing this to be just another song about pining, when he repeatedly challenges her, “Come on over, come on over, Let me love you, Let me love you better than you're used to.”

I think it’s a safe to say that we’ve all been in this outside looking in position before. When faced with this type of situation, our emotions run rampant, and we often can’t control them. Tyler Rich has managed to bring together all these confusing emotions and insert them into a catchy three-minute song that’s suited for modern country radio.

That emotional connection factor is the exact reason why this will resonate with the listener and should catapult Rich back into the Top 40 for the first time since 2018’s “The Difference.”
